Cat Cruz- Founder/Program Director

I am the founder and program director of the Bham Commons. I began working in homeless services in Birmingham in 2017 both in volunteer and paid capacity including Be A Blessing Birmingham, One Roof, Community On the Rise and Church of the Reconciler. I came to social work from a profession in education, my passion for working with those experiencing homelessness came when many of my young adult students let me know about their housing insecurity. I have since developed a connection with individuals in the homeless population in Birmingham and feel privileged to be able to spend time learning about the needs and systems endemic within homelessness. I consider many of my clients as friends and am honored to be able to share in their experiences and successes. In the work that we do, people let you into their lives at vulnerable openings, it is work that demands intentions, love and respect and I so appreciate the opportunity to do it.

I am Jimmekka Walker, the communications director of the Bham Commons. I have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology as well as a Master’s degree in Agency Counseling. I am currently the Peer Case Manager at the Church of the Reconciler. My passion for working in this population derived from a personal homeless experience. I vowed that when I was able to do so, that I would dedicate myself to assisting this population . Working with these individuals has been such a beautiful opportunity as well as a blessing. Cat and I are building as well as creating ways to assist/serve the homeless.
